Visit to the dentist and pregnancy
Complex treatment of teeth in pregnancy
The second trimester of pregnancy is considered by many doctors as the safest for carrying out all types of procedures. But this does not mean at all that in the remaining periods of pregnancy dental treatment is not performed!
Treatment of teeth in pregnancy is possible in any trimester: in the first, second and third too!
Dental treatment is extremely important in maintaining the health of the whole organism. Therefore, it is worth using control visits, during which the dentist performs an examination of the oral cavity, and can also provide helpful information.

Can a pregnant patient have dental x-rays taken?
As Prof. Krzysztof Mlosek (author of the curriculum of radiology at all medical universities in the country) used to say years ago “The only contraindication to taking a dental X-ray is the lack of indications for doing it”
X-rays are taken only if the doctor really needs it - this does not only apply to pregnant women. X-ray radiation could harm the fetus if the beam of rays was large and directed directly to the lower parts of the pregnant woman's body. However, in the case of dental X-ray, the beam of rays is directed to the area of the examined tooth in the oral cavity. Besides during the examination, to which the expectant mother is subjected, always her we put on a special, very voluminous protective apron. It protects the child from the possible effects of radiation.

Is it possible to use dental anesthesia in a pregnant patient?
During the entire period of pregnancy - even in the I trimeter - anesthesia can be used, if it is necessary to carry out a specific treatment. If a woman has always used anesthesia at the dentist because she has a low pain threshold or the visit stresses her so much, then pregnancy is the same - and she needs to be anesthetized. Stress and pain are very unfavorable in pregnancy. They can be the cause of health problems, which are better avoided by giving the expectant mother anesthesia.
It is only important that the anesthetic preparation does not contain vasoconstrictors. Therefore, the pregnant woman needs to tell the doctor about her condition so that he uses the appropriate preparation. This is because standard anesthetics contain adrenaline or norepinephrine. These are substances that cause blood vessels to contract, which is not good for pregnant women. However, there are preparations that do not contain these ingredients and that is exactly what is given to pregnant women. Expectant mothers can also be anesthetized by inhalation, that is, by administering nitrous oxide. In justified cases, general anesthesia is also used.

Removal of teeth in pregnancy
Tooth extraction is always a last resort and, of course, everything must be done to prevent this from happening. However, if the tooth is no longer suitable for treatment and the dentist qualifies it for extraction, then there is no need to wait - it needs to be removed. When the pregnancy proceeds normally, in the second trimester, you can calmly remove your teeth. In the first and third — it is better to consult this decision with a gynecologistwho will assess whether there are any contraindications to the extraction. When pregnancy is at risk, extraction should always be consulted with the gynecologist leading the pregnancy. If, after the removal of the tooth, it was necessary to give an antibiotic, the dentist will apply a drug from the penicillin group or their derivatives. They are allowed during pregnancy. Sometimes, when there is a high-risk pregnancy, and the tooth intended for removal is not the cause of inflammation, the extraction is postponed until after the baby is born.

Is canal treatment in pregnancy safe?
Dental root canal treatment is used when the tooth is already so damaged that the pulp (innervated tissue in the center of the tooth) has been infected. It consists in removing the pulp from the root canals of the tooth and filling these canals with a suitable preparation. In many online forums for pregnant women, you can often come across opinions that during pregnancy, teeth are not treated in this way. Usually the argument is precisely the impossibility of performing an X-ray examination, which shows the doctor the shape and length of the root canals. However, as we have explained before, it is not true that it is not possible to do a dental X-ray in pregnancy.
Our office is equipped with an endometrium — a device used for electronic, precise measurement of the length of the root canals, completely safe for the fetus. With the endometrium, it is not necessary to do an X-ray, so it is worth looking for such an office, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. Do not postpone root canal treatment. Infected pulp can be a source of infection, which, along with blood, will move to other areas of the body, posing a danger to the baby.
